Jeremy catches up with James Walker

Date: 23 February 2016

"It's great to see Jeremy launching this new venture. Service is key and its vital that people moving within or locating to Jersey have the support they need." James Walker

Jeremy: Which parish do you live in?

James: I've Just moved to Grouville. Previously I was in St Martin and Prior to that Trinity so I've always lived out east.

Jeremy: What do you like most about your parish?

James: I'm still getting to know it really. The area I've moved to has a great view of the sea. It's close to food shops and restaurants as well so it has everything I need. The Grouville/Gorey area has lots for the family as well. My 3-year-old loves it already. We are only 5 minutes' walk from the beach itself so it ticks so many boxes. We've had a nice surprise that the commute into St Helier in the morning is not to bad either with traffic which has made a good change from spending the morning queuing past all the schools from five Oaks down Mont Millais.

Jeremy: What or where is your favourite spot in Jersey and why?

James: I do a lot of cycling so since moving back to Jersey 3 years ago I've kind of re-discovered Jersey. I thought I knew it before but I was so wrong. I keep on seeing the island from different angles and in different weather and I love it. I'd have to say I have a few Favourite places. Watching the sun rise over looking Gorey every morning is pretty special but I still think the coast ride from Gorey to St Catherine's is one of the best places on the island. The atmosphere down at Rozel at high tide also has something special about it. There are just too many to choose from.

Jeremy: Describe your dream home in Jersey.

James: Having spent many years living in Oxford, which was fantastic, I was ready to move back to somewhere near the sea. Our new home has become something very special to me and one of its main plus points is the view so I'd have to say a good view would be top of the list. A good kitchen for friends and family to hang out together is also key. I love open plan living and creating the feeling of space. However, a good sofa to fall asleep on and a good TV room is a must. And finally a good garage for the bikes and other toys.

Jeremy: Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do.

James: I've worked in the Motorsport industry since 2001. I've raced in most of the major series around the world in single seaters and sports

car racing. I also have a sports management company that looks after young drivers and corporate entertainment/hospitality. I moved back to Jersey after the birth of my Daughter in 2012. I've always wanted to bring up my family here. In May of 2015 I took on the role of Culture, Active and Sport Executive at Visit Jersey. Having represented Jersey at the highest level for so long and being proud of where I come from, the success of the Island is something I feel very passionate about. I think we are all incredibly lucky to be able to call Jersey home. If people want to complain about it then that's fine, but I just want to enjoy every day I can here.

Jeremy: What is your favourite local ingredient to cook with?

James: Well sadly I became allergic to fish in 2005...I know! So now I have to watch all you locals enjoying all our local seafood. It drives me crazy. I know it's not really ingredients as such but I think we take for granted our Jersey Royals and Jersey milk. And don't even get me started on Jersey ice cream.......
